Tips for interacting with dashboards

Learn how to use tabs, filters, tooltips, and interactive charts for effective dashboard analysis.

Updated this week

Dashboards are designed to provide a comprehensive overview of data through interactive elements and visualizations. Many dashboards are organized into multiple tabs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the data. Understanding the structure and available features is essential for effective data analysis.

Tabs and navigation

Dashboards often contain two or more tabs at the top, allowing users to switch between different views or data sets. Each tab may present a unique set of metrics, raw data, or other relevant information. Click on a tab name, such as Metrics or Raw data, to switch between different dashboard sections.

Filters and their configuration

Filters are located below the tabs and allow users to refine the data displayed in the dashboard. Most filters are presented as dropdown menus, enabling the selection of one or more attributes. Common filters include team, user role, and date.

Types of filters

  • Dropdown filters: These filters allow you to select one or more options from a list, such as specific teams or user roles. For example, you can filter data to only show results for the IT or Sales teams.

  • Date filters: Date filters provide various preset and custom options to select specific time periods for analysis. You can choose from presets like "Yesterday" or "Last 30 days," or define custom intervals such as the previous 12 months.

Configuring filters: process steps

Before configuring filters, ensure you have identified the attributes or time periods relevant to your analysis.

  1. Open the filter menu: Click on the desired filter, such as Team, User role, or Date, to open the dropdown menu.

  2. Select filter options:

    • For attribute filters (e.g., Team), check one or more boxes to include specific values. You can use the search bar to quickly find options.

    • For date filters, choose from preset intervals (e.g., Previous 12 months) or define a custom range. You can further refine the selection by including or excluding the current month.

  3. Apply the filter: Click Add filter or Update filter to apply your selections and update the dashboard data.

  4. Refine filter settings (optional): For more detailed configuration, click on the filter again to access advanced options, such as excluding specific dates or selecting relative time intervals.

Benefits of using filters

  • Focus on relevant data by narrowing down results to specific teams, roles, or time periods.

  • Quickly compare different segments or intervals by adjusting filter settings.

  • Enhance the accuracy of your analysis by excluding irrelevant data points.

Understanding tooltips and additional information

Tooltips provide contextual information about key performance indicators (KPIs), charts, and data points. They are typically indicated by a small info icon or appear when hovering over specific elements in the dashboard.

Types of tooltips

  • KPI tooltips: Hover over the info icon within a KPI card to display a tooltip with additional details, such as data exclusions or calculation methods. For example, a tooltip may indicate that users with the status "Deactivated" are excluded from the count.

  • Chart tooltips: Move your mouse over a data point in a chart to reveal a tooltip window. This window displays detailed information for the selected data point, including all relevant metrics and their values for the corresponding time period.

Interpreting chart tooltips

Chart tooltips often include:

  • The exact value of each metric for the selected date or category.

  • Percentage changes compared to the previous interval, if applicable. For example, a daily analysis may show the percentage change from the previous day.

  • All available metrics for the selected data point, such as users, monthly active users (MAU), weekly active users (WAU), and daily active users (DAU).

Percentage changes are only displayed if there are corresponding entries for the previous interval.

Interacting with charts, tables and KPIs

Some dashboards allow you to interact directly with charts and tables to update filter settings and focus on specific data segments.

Interactive elements and their usage

  • Clicking chart elements: In certain charts, such as Events by type, clicking on a bar (e.g., Online, Hybrid, or Offline) will update the corresponding filter to show only events of the selected type.

  • Clicking table entries: In certain tables like the Events table, clicking on a blue-highlighted event title will set the event title as a filter, refining the data to focus on that specific event.

  • Highlighting a KPI in a chart: Hover your mouse over the name of a KPI in the chart legend to highlight only the corresponding data points. All other data points will be dimmed.

  • Filtering data in a chart: Click on the colored point in front of the legend item to remove that KPI or metric from the chart. Click again to add it back.

Exporting the entire dashboard as PDF

  1. Locate the export button: In the upper right area of the dashboard, click on Export tab as PDF.

  2. Download the PDF: The current view of the dashboard will be exported and downloaded as a PDF file.

All active filters are applied to the PDF export. The export always reflects the currently selected tab and filter settings.

Exporting data from KPIs and charts

  1. Hover over the KPI or chart: Move your mouse over the KPI or chart you want to export.

  2. Open the export menu: Click on the three dots (...) that appear in the upper right corner of the KPI or chart.

  3. Select download results: Click on Download Results.

  4. Choose the export format: Select from available formats:

    • CSV file

    • Excel file

    • JSON file

  5. Choose formatting options (optional): Decide whether to download formatted or unformatted data.

  6. Export chart as image (optional): If exporting a chart, you can also download it as a PNG image file.

All active filters are applied to the exported data. Exports can be performed for both individual KPIs and charts
