Create learning materials

Learn how to create various types of learning materials that can be used in adaptive and standard learning paths.

Updated over a month ago

Learning materials are an essential component for enabling both standard and adaptive learning paths. There are three ways to create learning materials:

  • Via the material library

  • Via the skill atom details view

  • Directly within a standard learning path

Who can use this feature?

  • Available for users with role Author, Curation Admin, Owner.

Create material

Via the material library

Follow these steps to create a new material:

  1. Click on Content management in the left navigation menu. This opens the material library, where you can see an overview of all existing materials.

  2. Click the + Material button located at the top right corner.

  3. In the dialog, select a material source and click on Next. The material builder will be opened.

  4. Enter the following attributes:

    • Title (required): The title of the learning material.

    • Hint message: Optionally, enter a hint message that will be displayed before users access the material.

    • Summary: Optionally, provide a summary of the material.

    • Based on the selected material source:

      • For external websites: URL (required).

      • For uploaded files and SCORM files: Upload a file (required).

      • For formatted text: Text content (required)

    • Duration in minutes (required): Enter a positive number representing the duration of the material. For example, if a YouTube video lasts 3 minutes and 45 seconds, you can round up and enter 4 minutes. This will be used afterwards to calculate the duration of learning paths.

    • Material purpose: Choose from options such as Informative, Example, Exercise, Orientation, Inspirational, Reference, and Tip.

    • Material type: Select the type of medium, such as Audio, Text, Video, Interactive, or Course.

    • Language: Choose between German and English.
Note: The language of a material cannot be changed after the creation.

  5. Click the Create material button located at the top right corner.

Tip: Learn more about the different material sources here.

Note: A preview of the learning material will be displayed on the right side of the material builder, as soon as the required attributes were entered.

Via the skill atom details view

Besides creating a learning material via the material library, you can also access the material builder from the content tab of the skill atom details view. This is helpful if you want to create a new material and directly link it to a specific skill atom.

  1. Click on Skills management in the left navigation menu. This opens the skills taxonomy, where you can see an overview of all skills, chapters, and atoms.

  2. Click on an existing atom in the table (or alternatively, create a new atom, more details here).

  3. Open the Content tab.

  4. Click on Edit in the lessons section.

  5. Click on + Create material .

  6. Proceed with step 3.) as defined above.

Note: Every material created this way can be found in the material library, and can also be connected to different atoms or used within standard learning paths. There is no difference to materials that were created via the material library directly.

Directly within a standard learning path

The third way of creating learning materials is embedded into the standard learning path builder. This enables the creation of materials on-the-fly while setting up a standard learning path.

  1. Click on Learning paths in the left navigation menu. This opens a list of all learning paths in your organization.
Note: There are two items called learning paths in the navigation menu. Here we refer to the one that is targeted to authors and curation admins, not learners.

  2. Click on an existing learning path in the table (or alternatively, create a new stadard learning path, more details here).

  3. Click on Edit in the content section.

  4. Click on + in the content pane at the left side of the screen.

  5. In the dialog, click on one of the following material types:

    1. Text

      1. Text

    2. Duration in minutes (required)

    3. Content details (required): Depends on the type of the material, e.g., URL, uploaded file, text content

  7. Click on Save.

Generate material using AI

The platform offers a feature to generate text-based learning materials using artificial intelligence, which can speed up and simplify the material creation process. It is available in the material builder for materials with source type Formatted Text. Moreover, it can be accessed when creating content blocks of type Text in the standard learning path builder.

FAQs

How many materials can be created?

There is no limit for the number of materials in your organization.

Is there a batch function to import multiple materials at once?

There is currently no batch import function available on the platform. However, our customer success team is always happy to help, if you plan to import a large number of learning materials.

Which types of materials can be generated using AI?

Currently, only text-based materials can be generated using AI.

How can I cut a YouTube video so that only a part of the video will be shown to learners?

You can define a start and end parameter for YouTube links to control which part of the video will be played when learners access the material within a learning path.

Let's say this is the regular URL of your YouTube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7bYgoHks3E

Let's assume the video should start at 1:30 and end at 3:40. This can be achieved by adding &start=1m30s&end=3m40s at the end of the URL:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7bYgoHks3E&start=1m30s&end=3m40s

If you just want to change the start or the end of the video (and not both), just leave out the other parameter, for example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7bYgoHks3E&start=1m30s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7bYgoHks3E&end=3m40s
